Vermont Natural History Museum & Pool Nature Center
Since 1997 The Vermont Museum of Natural History has been engaging people in southern Vermont with the natural world. Initially this was through their Southern Vermont Natural History Museum location on Hogback Mountain, where they displayed one of the largest natural history collections of native birds and mammals in New England. Over 250 species are represented in this historic taxidermy exhibit. Over the years, educational programs and live animals played a larger and larger role. By 2024, in-person programming saw over 24,000 people in four states.
In 2023, the Museum site on Hogback was closed and the collection put into storage. Staff and educational programming moved down the road to the Pool Nature Center in Marlboro, VT. While a new museum is in the works, this will be their base of operations and home for their collection of non-releasable native wildlife.
